Another alternative is the Auto-clear Search Box plugin (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/7632). Tested it with FireFox 3.05 and it works as expected.

I am not sure whether you got the topic correctly. It is about how to hide your search data from the search bar. It doesn't delete your search history.

To delete all the search history, right click on your search bar and select "Clear Search History".
