What is the font that Google uses in its Logo?
It's a font called Catull BQ-Regular.

Now, how did we find out that? Welcome to the new Web App WhatTheFont. If you are a designer or a font addict, this is one site that you are going to fall in love with.

Using WhatTheFont is dead simple. Just upload the image/logo or give the url to the image. WhatTheFont will try to guess the alphabets in the logo. You can fine tune this auto-detection and once this is done, you get to know the name of the font used.

Actually, you can see the logo written out in a number of fonts that WhatTheFont thinks matches your logo, and usually the first one itself will be the correct find. You can also compare your logo with different logos that WhatTheFont churns out in matching fonts and find out the font yourself.

Want to get easily noticed in social sites? Convert your avatar into an amazing ASCII art to make heads turn.

Here we give you 5 web applications that allow you to convert an image in your hard disk or internet into an ascii art.

  1. AsciiConvert

    AsciiConvert is one among the best image to text converter out there. It has a wide range of options to vary the image quality, an option to export the ascii art as a PNG image, a gallery where you can view art created by other users and an option to get a direct link to your ascii art for use in other sites/forums.

  2. IMG2TXT

    Almost same as the above service, except that it lacks many of the features like a gallery and exporting to PNG image. But it have some extra bells and whistles - you can mention which alphabets to use, what is the desired width etc.

  3. ASCII Art Generator

    An extremely simple image to ASCII converter. There are just two options to mention: whether you want 'Black on White' or 'White on Black'. Upload a picture and you are done.

  4. ascii.mastervb.net

    As can be seen from the above image, this tool produces the best result if you want the output to be in HTML rather than pure ascii text. This is also the only service which allows you to type some text and convert it into ASCII art.

  5. ASCII-O-MATIC

  6. A flash based Ascii art generator which looks promising but lacks usability. The 'Upload' and 'Generate Html' options are using pop-up windows which Firefox was happy to block. Moreover it accepts only JPG files of 60x50 px. What distinguish this from the others is the option to draw the image in ASCII blocks, which creates a more realistic picture. Of all, we found this one to be the best for creating really cool avatar pics.

An ascii art can make your signature look cool. You can copy paste an ascii art into a forum when image uploading is restricted by the forum admins.
We at DailyGyan is currently running short of idea waves. So what other uses can you imagine for an ascii art? Tell us in the comments.

I have always wondered why Twitter uses the alias (the Twitter user name) instead of a person's real name when one post a tweet.

The Twitter settings page gives the following explanation for the text field "Name".

Name - Enter your real name, so people you know can recognize you.
Username - Your URL: http://twitter.com/USERNAME

OK Twitter, I accept that people I know, need my real name to recognize me. Just one question. Why the hell are you not using the Name field that I entered, anywhere else? As you yourself have said, I tend to identify people easily by a name like Thomas Anderson rather than something like tander08foru, which always leaves me scratching my head wondering who this guy was.

So, untill someone from Twitter sees this post and make us all happy, here is a little hack to get things going for the while.

Twitter uses the real name of a person as the "alt" field in his profile picture. What it essentially means, is that if you block the images, you will see the real name of the person in text.

In Firefox, go to Tools -> Options -> Content. Uncheck the "Load Images Automatically" checkbox. I have tried adding an exception to block amazonaws.com (from where twitter serves the profile pics) alone. But somehow this prevents the alt tag to appear all together. If someone knows a better way, please do tell.

In Internet Explorer, go to Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced. Check the Accessibility -> "Always expand ALT text for images" field and uncheck the Multimedia -> Show pictures field.

That's it. Now go to twitter.com/home and see the difference.

Thunderbird fans using Remember The Milk, gets another reason to cheer. The popular task manager and GTD application - Remember The Milk now has a provider plugin to sync with Thunderbird.

A good guy named Micheal Wu made an extension, which works along with Lightning extension to bring RTM to your Thunderbird. Using this extension, you get bi-directional access to your RTM tasks. You can add tasks, delete them, modify them and set their priorities, right from Thunderbird.

  1. Install the Lightning extension for Thunderbird, if you haven't installed that already.
  2. Download Remember the Milk Provider extension and install it.
  3. Restart Thunderbird.
  4. Go to Calendar view (Ctrl + 3) and select File -> New -> Calendar.
  5. Select "On the Network" and hit Next.

  6. Select Remember the Milk Provider. You don't have to care about the Location text field. Click Next.

  7. Give a suitable Name for the Calendar. Your RTM to-do list will appear as events in this calendar.
  8. Now, you will see that a new task has been added to your task list in Thunderbird's main screen, which reads "Please Authenticate RTM. Open me to see how". Double click on this event. There will be an address in the description of this event. Go to this address using your web browser and you will see this screen.

  9. Click on "OK, I'll Allow it". Now come back to Thunderbird's task list and mark the "Please Authenticate RTM..." event as completed.
  10. That's it. If everything went as expected, you'll see a message box saying you are authenticated and your RTM tasks will appear immediately in Thunderbirds task pane.

You can add, delete, modify these tasks from Thunderbird itself. To find out what more you can do with this little extension, watch this video that the extension author himself have made.

Do tell us what you think about this addon in the comments. Once again, thanks to Micheal Wu.

For those who haven't yet heard about Mozilla Prism (earlier known as Mozilla WebRunner), let's get some info directly from the horse's mouth:

Prism is an application that lets users split web applications out of their browser and run them directly on their desktop.
Prism lets users add their favorite web apps to their desktop environment:
When invoked, these applications run in their own window:

Prism is based on the Firefox engine, but doesn't have any of the Firefox's bells and whistles, and when I said any, I really meant any! There is not even a preference window where you can set the proxy information.
Then how do you enable proxy for prism? Read on.

The instructions are applicable for both Windows and Linux versions of Prism.

  1. Run prism. The following dialog should pop up.

    Type about:config into the URL field. Give it a name like config and enable the check box Desktop to create a desktop icon. Click OK.

  2. Once the above steps are done, an icon named config would have been created on your Desktop.
    Double click that shortcut to see the following window.

    Click "I'll be careful, I promise!" button to show the main configuration screen.

  3. Type network.proxy into the Filter field.

  4. Double click on network.proxy.type and give it anyone of the following values:
    0 - Direct connection, no proxy. (Default)
    1 - Manual proxy configuration. (If in doubt, select this)
    2 - Proxy auto-configuration (PAC).
    4 - Auto-detect proxy settings.
    5 - Use system proxy settings (Default in Linux).

  5. Double click on network.proxy.http and enter the IP Address of your proxy server.

  6. Double click on network.proxy.http_port and enter the port of your proxy server.

  7. Repeat the above two steps for network.proxy.ssl and network.proxy.ssl_port

For your information, this is how my values look:
network.proxy.type = 1
network.proxy.http = 192.168.0.1
network.proxy.http_port = 8080
network.proxy.ssl = 192.168.0.1
network.proxy.ssl_port = 8080

That's all. You can now close the about:config window. Now prism should start working over the proxy.
